Renewa and the Mammoth Solar Project: A Historic Collaboration in Clean Energy and Community Impact
June 12, 2025
At Renewa, we believe in forging lasting partnerships that empower landowners, support local communities, and drive the transition to a cleaner energy future. Our collaboration on the Mammoth Solar Project exemplifies how thoughtful development and strong relationships can deliver long-term value for everyone involved.
About the Mammoth Solar Project
The Mammoth Solar Project, developed by Doral Renewables, is one of the largest solar energy projects in the United States. Spanning approximately 13,000 acres in Starke and Pulaski Counties in northwest Indiana, the project will generate 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy, enough to power about 275,000 households each year.
Named “Mammoth” both for its massive scale and for the ancient mammoth bones discovered in the fields where it now stands, the project is being built in four phases:
Mammoth North, which began operations in late 2024, delivers 400 megawatts (MW) of energy, powering approximately 75,000 households. The energy is sold to AEP Energy. Mammoth North also features an innovative agrivoltaics element, where a flock of sheep, donkeys, alpacas, and kunekune pigs naturally maintain the grasslands.
Mammoth South, currently under construction, is expected to come online by the end of 2026. It will generate 300 MW of energy for around 65,000 households, with power also sold to AEP Energy.
Mammoth Central I and II, also under construction, will each contribute an additional 300 MW. Electricity from these phases is contracted to AEP Energy, Bank of America, PNC Bank, CVS Health, and Dietz and Watson.
Our Partnership with Landowners
Renewa has been deeply involved in supporting landowners throughout all four phases of the Mammoth Solar Project. Our contributions to this transformative development include:
Early Development Support
Renewa’s Vice President of Land, Jonathan Rich, along with a team of Land Agents, began working with landowners in early 2022 during the planning and construction of Mammoth North. From attending construction progress meetings to aligning on shared goals, our presence helped build a foundation of trust.
Construction Oversight
Our team conducted regular site visits throughout the development process, ensuring construction aligned with landowners’ expectations. This included guidance on the sale of two switchyards that enabled grid connectivity for the project.
Farming and Agrivoltaics Partnership
We partnered with a local family of farmers to continue agricultural operations outside the project perimeter. Additionally, through collaboration with Doral, these same farmers are helping implement agrivoltaics practices inside the project fencing, combining solar energy production with sustainable farming.
Why This Collaboration Matters
This project is a powerful example of how Renewa supports landowners in realizing their goals while advancing sustainability and community development.
Empowering Landowners
By partnering with local families, we ensured they benefited financially and strategically from their participation in a major renewable energy project.
Several landowners used 1031 exchanges to reinvest in additional farmland or expand into new states. Others diversified their portfolios by investing in Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), gaining exposure to commercial real estate and multifamily housing. Two landowners chose to sell their holdings entirely and relocate to warmer climates to enjoy retirement.
Advancing Sustainability
When fully complete, Mammoth Solar will produce 1.3 GW of clean energy, enough to power more than 275,000 households annually, pushing northwest Indiana toward a greener, more sustainable future.
Building Community Connections
Renewa played a key role in bringing together landowners, developers, and community leaders. In addition to generating new tax revenues, the project will deliver annual economic development payments to Pulaski County, further enhancing the long-term benefits for the region.
Let’s Build a Brighter Future Together
The Mammoth Solar Project is more than just a milestone in clean energy. It’s a testament to what’s possible when communities, developers, and landowners work together. Renewa is proud to support projects that leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
